🔗 Fully automated payments with a PayPal Billing Agreement
In partnership with PayPal, we’ve launched PayPal Billing Agreements. This update affects how PayPal works with Maxer going forward.
Maxer has accepted PayPal since 2008. It’s consistently been one of the most popular ways for customers to pay. Over time, we’ve improved how it integrates with our system to make it more flexible and user-friendly.
On 13th June 2025, we launched PayPal Billing Agreements for our clients — a new way to link your PayPal account to your Maxer account for all future payments.
✅ What is a PayPal Billing Agreement?
A PayPal Billing Agreement is a secure way to link your PayPal account to your Maxer account. Once it’s set up, PayPal can automatically handle payments for:
-
Hosting services
-
Domain renewals
-
New orders
-
Any future renewal invoices
This is now PayPal’s default standard for recurring payments and replaces the older subscription-based system. Invoices are generated as usual, and payments are processed automatically using the card or bank account saved on PayPal.
🤔 Is a Billing Agreement right for you?
It's a great fit if you:
-
Prefer PayPal for all payments
-
Want automatic charging of renewal invoices
-
Prefer not to manage individual subscriptions for each service
⚙️ How do I set up a Billing Agreement?
You can create a Billing Agreement:
-
During checkout, when placing a new order
-
When paying an invoice
Once it’s active, your PayPal account will appear under Billing -> Payment Methods in your Maxer dashboard.
When a billing agreement is created, it replaces any previous PayPal subscriptions, so you may receive an email from PayPal confirming that one or more subscriptions have been cancelled.
🏦 How can I change the card or bank account linked to PayPal?
If you need to update the credit/debit card or bank account PayPal uses to pay Maxer, follow these steps:
-
Log in to your PayPal account
-
Click the gear icon ⚙️ (top right of the page)
-
Go to the Payments tab
-
Click Automatic Payments
-
Select Maxer from the list
-
Click to change the Funding Source
-
Choose the new credit/debit card or bank account
This allows you to switch the payment method behind your Billing Agreement without needing to reconnect PayPal to Maxer.
Some PayPal business accounts have different menu options, so you might need to go to directly to the Pre-approved payments page.
🛑 Can I cancel the Billing Agreement?
Yes. You can cancel the Billing Agreement at any time from the Payment Methods page of your Maxer account. You remain in full control.
We recommend keeping at least 1 payment method on your Maxer account at all times, such as a PayPal Billing Agreement, Direct Debit or a credit/debit card.
🔁 What happened to PayPal Subscriptions?
Previously, we used PayPal Subscriptions to support recurring payments. These worked, but they had some limitations:
-
Each service required a separate subscription
-
Lacked control over the timing of a subscription
-
Managing many different subscriptions was unnecessary extra work
PayPal Billing Agreements solve these issues. One agreement covers all services, and you can manage or cancel it easily. It’s the simplest and most flexible way we’ve ever supported PayPal.
