Most domain names require an EPP code before they can be transferred to a new provider.
An EPP code (Extensible Provisioning Protocol code), sometimes called an authorisation code or transfer code, is a security code used to protect domain names during the transfer process. It helps ensure that only the domain owner or authorised contact can move a domain name between providers.
If you wish to transfer a domain name to or from Maxer, you will normally need the EPP code from the current provider before the transfer can begin.
There are some exceptions. The UK family of domain names, including .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk, currently use a tag system. For example, our tag is "MAXER". However, the UK registry, Nominet, are planning to standardise their system and will start using EPP codes during 2027.
How to obtain the EPP code from Maxer
If your domain name is registered with Maxer, you can obtain the EPP code from our client area as follows:
- Log in to your account at https://my.maxer.com/login.
- Click Domains in the navigation menu.
- Find the domain name in the list and click 'Manage'.
- Click Registrar Lock and ensure the lock is disabled.
- Click Get EPP Code.
Depending on the domain extension, the EPP code may either be displayed immediately or sent by email to the domain's administrative contact.
If you need to update the administrative contact, click Contact Information within the domain management area.
If you are unable to retrieve the EPP code, or the code appears to be invalid, please open a support ticket and we will be happy to assist.
How to obtain the EPP code from another provider
If your domain name is registered with another provider, you will need to obtain the EPP code directly from them.
Most providers make the EPP code available through their client area or domain management portal. The exact process varies between providers, so you may need to consult their documentation or contact their support team.
If you are unsure who currently manages your domain name, you can often find this information using the ICANN Registration Data Lookup Tool.
