This article is intended for customers considering forwarding their Maxer email to Gmail instead of using IMAP or Google Workspace (due to Google discontinuing Gmailify).

With POP3 import removed by Google, some users consider forwarding email from their Maxer mailbox to Gmail.

While forwarding can work, it has important limitations.

Why forwarding is not recommended as a primary solution

1. Authentication problems (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)

Many sending domains use strict authentication policies.

When email is forwarded:

  • SPF often fails

  • DKIM can fail

  • DMARC policies may cause Gmail to reject or quarantine messages

This can result in missing or rejected emails.

2. Spam forwarding

If spam is forwarded to Gmail:

Gmail may treat our servers as the source of the spam (due to the forwarding of spam emails).

Over time, this can negatively affect deliverability to Gmail from our shared servers.

3. Increased outbound traffic

Every forwarded email is resent from our servers to Gmail.

High volumes may cause rate limits or temporary restrictions, especially on a shared server.

If you still choose to forward

We strongly recommend:

  • Keeping a full mailbox on our server with IMAP access.

  • Using forwarding only as a convenience copy, if necessary.

  • Treating the original mailbox as the primary location.

If forwarding from your account causes deliverability or abuse issues, we may require it to be limited or disabled to protect server IP reputation and assure that the deliverability of all other domains hosted on the server is not affected.

Recommended alternatives

Instead of forwarding, we recommend:

  • Using IMAP/POP3 in a normal email app, or

  • Adding your mailbox to the Gmail mobile app via IMAP, or

  • Moving fully to Google Workspace.
