When registering any domain name, it's important to enter the correct contact information for the domain name owner. Thankfully, if you enter the wrong information on a UK domain name, you can correct it for free during the first 28 days. This has proven to be very useful when clients misspell their company name or mistakenly enter the wrong company number.

To review and update the legal owner, please follow this guide:

  1. Login to https://secure.nominet.org.uk
    Your username is usually the same as the email address for our client area.
    If you have not logged in to Nominet before, please request a password reset.
  2. Once logged in, you will see a list of your domain names. In the list, please find the specific domain name you wish to review/update, then click the dropdown menu beside it
  3. You'll see an overview of all your domain information.
  4. Click 'EDIT' under the 'REGISTRANT' section. If you have misspelled the registrant information, you can correct it on this page.

After the 28 days, Nominet charge a £10+vat fee to update the legal owner, and you would follow these instructions:

  1. Login to https://secure.nominet.org.uk
    Your username is usually the same as the email address on our client area.
    If you have not logged into Nominet before, please request a password reset.
  2. The current owner must complete these steps:
    1. Select the domain name by clicking on the white box to the left of it
    2. Click on ‘transfer domain’
    3. Check to see that the correct domain name is being affected by the transfer
    4. Enter an email address for the new registrant (this can be kept the same if only updating the registrant name)
    5. Make the online card payment
    6. Agree to the Nominet terms and conditions
  3. The new owner must complete these steps:
    1. Receive an email to accept the transfer and click on the link
    2. Choose to accept or decline the transfer
    3. Select whether to add to existing registrant or enter new details
    4. Choose to assign the domain to a new registrar or leave it with the existing provider
    5. Pay the fee if not already paid at the first stage of the process
